Unbinding the mind’s potential begins with opening to the possibility that the answers to life’s deepest questions exist beyond what may be seen with our own eyes. As the mental grip surrounding conventional beliefs relaxes, the vision extending past our foundational convictions expands. While seemingly vast in nature, the queries that arise ultimately point at only one request — to understand what this is all about.
The unknown, as we are led to believe, is designed to remain just that. But, even if the great enigma were unwrapped before us in perfectly comprehensible prose, how likely is it that we would recognize the gift being bestowed? We are a fast-paced population with little time for superfluous nonsense, far more apt to trust tangible fabrications than that which cannot be gathered through the senses. It’s not that we are incapable of comprehending the mysteries of the universe; they simply remain hidden beyond a wall of selective discrimination.
What is considered to be of material value within mainstream society is typically of little use to those set on discovering true wisdom. Doubt and mistrust however, can initially be used in our favor — pushing the desire to discover answers to an experiential level and not merely accepting decrees by reasoning of blind faith. This critical exploration places the onus on each of us individually, to develop and nurture perceptions that are truly our own, not basking in suppositions that merely support the assertions of another.
As indicated in the essay, Self-Revolution — Transcending Conceptual Candy, moving toward conscious awareness involves developing a practice or routine and working through our discursive tendencies. This refers to dissipating patterns of judgment, addiction, anger and greed that have habituated over our lifetimes. If looked upon as a gradual form of mental purification, it should be clear why this process can at times be uncomfortable.
The human psyche is a complex labyrinth of behaviors, patterns and emotions and strolling through its intricate mazes provide a hand delivered invitation to private gallery showings of our own personal nature. Both artist and patron, accepting responsibility for the masterpiece we are creating is not merely an accord to pick up a brush and begin splashing colors on a canvas. It is a deliberate understanding, recognizing that in order to craft a clear image, the old, dried up paint must first be removed.
Any time the unknown encroaches upon the security of the known, it invariably carries with it, a measure of discomfort. However, there is no such thing as the known; control is, and always has been, an illusion and the tighter we grasp onto it the more difficult change is. Examination of our habit patterns is best done with eyes wide open and in this way, we develop an understanding of the implications and recognize them as they unfold. With awareness of what it is we’re facing and why, the inherent challenges will appear far less intimidating and may instead be welcomed as signs of progress.
While this may not sound like the spiritual party promised, what exists on the other side is a breathtaking reward for the energy expended. We are moving toward a sense of peace and balance that entails the removal of barriers clouding the mind’s ability to freely experience. As negative dependencies are systematically uprooted and fall away what we are moving toward is freedom — freedom from addiction, negativity, and destructive behavior. It’s an authentic high leaving us forever transformed.
